Each year, more than 500,000 cases of head and neck cancer are diagnosed worldwide, and more than 200,000 people die from the disease. The opening ceremony of the International Federation of Head Neck Oncology Societies (IFHNOS), 5th World Congress and the American Head Neck Society (AHNS) joint meeting was held in New York on July 27, 2014 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Head Neck Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). The event highlighted how important it is to identify the warning signs of head and neck cancer, which may include, among other things, a lump in the neck, sores in the mouth, sore throat that does not heal, difficulty swallowing and changes in voice.
